NUTCRACKER IN WONDERLAND

GENTLE HUMAN

BELLA LUNA

SHIFTS

Always at the forefront is the connection of music, theatricality and visual interactions, Chan’s "Shifts" is a work that exemplifies his approach to dance. The musical structure interpreted by the cello transfers its essence to the dancers and their movements through fertile choreographic imagination.  Manipulating both props and design this work continually offers surprises and literal - shifts - in the interplay between the live music and dancers.

The Four Seasons

Beginning with the first blossoms of Spring, through the heat of Summer, into the twirls of Fall, and finally the swirling of Winter snow, Joseph Morrissey’s The Four Seasons makes Vivaldi’s notes dance off of the page. Intricate footwork, unpredictable partnering, and elaborate movement patterns bring the feeling, color, and happenings of each season to life. Performed with a four string quartet.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is so much more than “the lift”, music, and other pop culture references. The 1987 film put center stage the reversal of gender roles, the work to break down socioeconomic barriers, and the bravery it takes to shake up traditions – values that strongly resonate with Ballet Co.Laboratory.

Obsedian Stare

Obsidian Stare is a demonstration of women and the beautiful strength they possess. Mirroring the music, which uses classical themes with modern rearrangements, this cast draws on classical ballet technique to perform contemporary work. Drawing inspiration from the Greek mythological character Medusa, the work explores the spectrums of both beauty and strength, probing the audience to realize that they are not mutually exclusive.

CARMEN IN THE 1920s

Swing dance goes en pointe with this playful yet fiery twist on an opera classic. Dance through the roaring 20s with Carmen, a fiercely independent charmer on a journey of fated love. Accompanied by a live jazz ensemble to a fresh arrangement of Georges Bizet’s bold score, Carmen in the 1920s bristles with excitement, danger, and destiny.

Ballet Co.Laboratory invites you to venture where the Where the Wild Things Are for Ballet Co.Laboratory’s interpretation of the colorful children’s tale by Maurice Sendak. Join upper-level students of The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory as they set out to find freedom in imagination and the resilience of the human spirit.

Kitchen Dances

Kitchen Dances is a dancing (her)story exploring how women’s power of choice and agency over their own lives have evolved throughout various time periods and cultures. Witness the metamorphosis of the heart of the home from a place of duty to an experimental playground of possibilities. Dance styles featured in this production include contemporary ballet, flamenco, modern, and jazz.

At Ballet Co. Laboratory (BCL), collaboration is at the forefront of our work, as it is the pulse of learning and creation. As a professional ballet company and school, we strive to collaborate with our community in surprising new ways to challenge the stereotypes and culture of ballet – helping to evolve the art form forward. BCL believes in the transformative power of experimentation, innovation, and making the impossible come to life.

Our Company

The Ballet Co. Laboratory Company includes ten company artists, six trainees, and four guest artists under the direction of Artistic Director Zoé Emilie Henrot. With five Company productions each season, BCL reaches diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds with our unique mix of classic and contemporary repertoire. The Company is committed to creating new works highlighting athleticism, storytelling, and distinctive collaborations to continue fostering a new generation of dancers and dance supporters.

Touring Repertoire

BCL’s Company repertoire includes works for 6 to 35 dancers and features a wide range of styles. Full-length productions and abbreviated performances can be tailored to the presenter’s desires. Community master classes and lectures may also be offered in presenting cities.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

·       Minimum stage dimensions of 30-40 feet wide x 20-35 feet deep

·       Even wood floor, preferably sprung

·       Marley dance floor covering entire performance surface (BCL has touring Marley for rent if needed)

·       Sound system with sufficient amplification and speaker coverage of entire auditorium

·       Industry-standard light board

·       Two monitors onstage with independent control

·       Minimum of two dressing rooms

·       Minimum 4-hour tech time (not including set up of lighting and floor)
